I collected CSE-23 and CSE-24 Selected Candidates’ Marksheets and based on the same, following is my analysis of scoring patterns and comparison for the 2 years:

Highlights:

  1. Essay scores have gone down in CSE-24 in comparison to CSE-23. Also, scoring in higher bracket of 131-140 marks was tougher this year. This means that Aspirants have to push themselves harder to get better marks in Essay. Many have scored less than 90 while others have scored above 121. Thus, Essay Paper has become the difference!
  2. GS-1 scores went up by a country-mile. The simple reason is, you believe it or not, scaling or normalization. Basically, in CSE-23, UPSC was adamant and didn’t give marks in GS-1 with many scoring in range of 81-90 marks whereas in CSE-24, many have scored above 100 and also above 110.
  3. GS-2 scores’ average remained the same as last year but scoring in higher brackets of 121-130 was tougher than CSE-23.
  4. GS-3 remains “Achilles Heel” for the Aspirants as UPSC simply does not want to award marks in this subject. It’s been 3-4 years now. The average among selected candidates hovers below 90 marks and scoring in higher brackets remains tough.
  5. GS-4 scores went down and saw fewer candidates in higher brackets. This is despite the fact that paper was tough this year and generally UPSC doles out marks when that happens. There are two distinct ranges here i.e. of those who have scored between 121-130 and others who scored between 101-110.

Sir on public administration….since from last year or two I’ve seen that many people are not taking it as an optional and so it builds some self doubt , whether or not would this optional be fruitful.. definitely I love my optional but analysis would work as cherry on top..

      दीदी जिस सब्जेक्ट में आपकी पकड़ मज़बूत हो और जिसे आप अच्छे से पढ़ सकते हो, समझ सकते हो। उसी विषय को आप ऑप्शनल सब्जेक्ट चुने।।
      धन्यवाद।।
