Hello,
My name is Dr Anshu priya. I have completed my MBBS from AIIMS Patna and worked as a junior resident doctor after that. This was my third attempt at civil services. I secured 16th Rank with medical science as my optional.

I would like to share my optional strategy with all of you!

Is medical science a worth optional?
I think it is! Especially if you have studied at least the basic books in your MBBS well. It also helps you in interview as being a medical doctor, you cannot escape health related questions. Also, it keeps your options open for post graduation.
How to Prepare?
Follow your basic books of MBBS.
A. Anatomy- BD chaurasiya.
B. Physiology- AK Jain + flow charts of ganong.
C. Biochem- Satyanarayan
D. Patho- Harshamohan
E. Micro- Ananthnarayan
F. FMT- Narayan Reddy or Prepladder notes
G. Pharma- KDT or Govind Rai Garg sir notes.
H. Med- Mathews or Deepak marwah sir notes.
I. OBG/Gyne- Laxmi seshadri.
J. Pediatrics- op ghai.
K. CFM- Exam prep manual of Vivek Jain
L. Surgery- Manipal’s manual
— For some other topics ,use internet i.e Medscape /WHO site/Mayo clinic …(available free of cost)
— Make use of your friends in PG…try to get some recent updated and treatment protocols.

Role of Note Making
- Just like other papers, note making is important here also.
- So, take out print out of syllabus and last 7 years question paper. Your notes should be in the form of question and answer.
- There are two videos by Anand sharma sir on YouTube in which he has discussed the keywords of med science questions and how to approach them.
- I highly recommend those videos.
Test Series and Practice
- Paper in medical science is generally lengthy as there is a tendency to ask questions within questions…..so practice a lot!
- Best way is to practise all past year question papers from 2013 onwards.
- One can also join a test series. I joined UPSC medicos for the same .
— ONE VERY IMP POINT is to practise at least two full length tests before the final exam in 3 hours .
— Use a lot of flow charts ,diagrams in your answers. For this you can collect all these from your basic books and compile at one place. (eg – all flow charts of Harrison). Diagrams are very imp in Anatomy / Physio. Use colour pencils in your diagrams.
Role of Coaching
If you have read well in your MBBS, coaching is not required. You can take prepladder / marrow for some time from your PG prepqring friends and study topics you face difficulty in.
Can medical science be taken by BDS/BAMS etc
According to me…NO! As the basic premise of modern medicine is quite different and such people will face a lot of difficult in this optional.
