- Do not overthink or stress. Do not day-dream. Timetable will help you in avoiding these vices.
- Have like-minded friends in your study group. Keep study group small, like 3–4 people only. In a smaller group, it is easy to have common interests. My core group consisted of 4 people including me. Other three are in IDAS, IRS and IPS!
- Do not worry if your friends or one of them clears the exam but you could not. Keep trying hard. You have to be your own man.
- Go for an outing only and only when you want. Not when your friends want. You have to learn to manage them. If your study group is small and consists of true like minded friends then they will understand.
- Handle your relationships. Relationships take a huge toll during UPSC preparation. Make it a habit to call your near ones at least once a day.
- Healthy lifestyle is a must. Eat well. Focus on nutrition. Give 30–60 minutes to your body. Yoga, meditation, gym or a brisk walk are of utmost importance to keep you healthy and stress free.
- Sleep 6–7 hours. Anything less or more isn’t good for preparation. In my 1st attempt I used to sleep only 4 hrs a day! Trust me, it took huge toll on my health and preparation.
- Do not indulge in ‘drink and study‘ habit. This is no more college. Its matter of beating other 99% candidates. Be at your best if you want your name in the final list.
- Do not run after N number of study materials. Have a concise material. There is no point in collecting or reading 100 books when all you need is selected ones to clear CSE. Mains Strategy A2Z and Prelims Strategy A2Z.
- Read-revise your concise material multiple times. Revision and only revision can help you sail through UPSC. Syllabus is so vast that if you don’t revise well, you won’t remember a thing! Revision Strategy
- Stay away from herd mentality. Do not worry about what your friends are reading. Have faith in your strategy. Do not opt IAS as 1st choice just because your friend is doing so. Do not go for a particular cadre because a mentor has told. Be your own guide.
Lastly, keep reminding yourself, why you started this journey and ask yourself if you are doing justice to it with your efforts.
Every night before going to bed, I used to recall my entire day. I used to question my efforts. If you are satisfied with your efforts then you are in right direction!!!
