In this post, I have dealt with preparation of Mains GS-3 Science and Environment.
Science and Technology Syllabus
Current Portion:
1. Developments and their applications and effects in everyday life.
2. Indigenization of technology and developing new technology.
These 2 are to be done solely from these 3 current sources:
- The Hindu. Leave over the top factual news. You have to be selective in what you read. See below the PYQPs to know focus areas.
- Vision Monthly Magazine PDFs (Available Online).
- Insights Secure Compilation (Available Online).
No need to read N number of magazines like Science Reporter etc because hit-miss ratio and cost-benefit ratio are very poor. Idea is to read few sources but read them religiously.
3. Achievements of Indians in science & technology: Though this looks current based topic, you also need to know historical achievements of Indians in science and tech. For example: Achievements of S.N. Bose. Hence you need to google historical achievements and make notes. Be selective. Keep eye on persons or achievements in news.

Static + Current Portion:
4. Awareness in the fields of IT, Space, Computers, robotics, nano-technology, bio-technology and issues relating to intellectual property rights.
5. Conservation, environmental pollution and degradation, environmental impact assessment. GS-3 Environment + Disaster
6. Disaster and disaster management.
For points 4 to 6, it is very important to have static notes covering what-how-when-history-why-present-future-pros-cons-govt policy.
Source for this is Google. For Example, for IPR you should make 2-3 page point wise notes including:
- What is patent or IPR?
- Why patents?
- History i.e. 1970 act.
- Present status and concerns.
- Expected future.
- Pros and cons.
- Govt policy.
Similarly, what is EIA, why EIA, History of EIA and so on….
- Static source for environment is Shankar IAS Notes. It covers questions like Allelopathy asked in 2016 Mains.
- Static source for disaster is Yojana MARCH-2012.
Add current affairs to your static notes. For Example, if Robotics or AI is in news, add issue to your static notes on Robotics.
This clip mentions the exact articles of The Hindu from which Science based questions were asked in 2017 Mains.
